The reference programme of Wiener Privatklinik

Wiener Privatklinik has developed a specific reference programme designed for general practitioners. The purpose of the reference programme is to provide general practitioners with the possibility of participating in the hospital treatment of their patients with supplementary insurance cover. The general practitioner’s knowledge about the patient’s case history and the reasons for a hospitalisation are of major significance for any hospital treatment and should also be remunerated. Therefore the GP is integrated in the treatment of the patient and receives 20% of the fee of the specialist carrying out the treatment, in accordance with the fee schedule of the private health insurance sector.

However, it is important that an admission in the context of the reference programme is clearly identified as such when the patient is admitted to our hospital and that in the further course of the treatment you provide proof of your participation by means of the relevant entries in the patient’s medical records.

The objectives of the reference programme are:

  • to maintain the relationship between the patient and the primary referring physician during and after the patient’s hospitalisation,

  • to offer the referring physician the possibility to choose the specialists (reference physicians) him- or herself and to develop a joint therapy plan with them,

  • to guarantee that the primary referring physician will receive an adequate remuneration for his/her services provided before and during the hospitalisation of the patient. This remuneration will be paid from the fees of the reference specialist in accordance with the distribution of tasks.

The referring physician decides which of the available reference physicians he/she wants to charge with the treatment of his/her patient. This allows the referring physician to demand optimal medical care and at the same time to actively participate in the treatment. The permanent availability of the reference physician is ensured, as is the treatment-relevant communication between the selected reference physician and the referring physician.

The administrative tasks (including invoicing) required for this programme will be performed by Wiener Privatklinik.

Implementation of the reference programme

In the context of this programme, private patients in need of hospital treatment can be referred to Wiener Privatklinik by their primary physicians.

We offer you three options

  1. The referring physician takes care of the primary treatment the referring physician receives the full treatment fee.

  2. The referring physician asks a specialist to act as a consulting physician or to perform a consecutive surgery required by the patient. For these services, the reference physician receives a consulting or a treatment fee.

  3. The primary physician (= referring physician) refers the patient to a specialist he/she has selected for admission to and treatment at Wiener Privatklinik, but participates in the treatment of the patient and receives a share of the fees for his/her work.
