The x-ray institute at Wiener Privatklinik

The ground floor of Wiener Privatklinik accommodates the x-ray institute which is available to all patients of our hospital as well as to external patients of all health insurance funds.

For our in-house patients appointments are arranged by our nursing staff.

The following x-ray examinations are performed at our institute:

  • Heart and lung x-rays
  • Skeletal x-rays of the spinal cord, the pelvis and the joints
  • Examinations of the kidneys, urinary bladder, prostrate gland, uterus and ovaries
  • Examinations of the gastro-intestinal tract
  • Mammography
  • CT measurements of bone density (This is an outpatient examination which is not paid by the health insurance fund.)
  • Ultrasound

We perform the following types of ultrasound diagnostics:

  • Abdominal ultrasound: to detect gall and kidney stones, to eliminate the possibility of abdominal tumors and diseases of the prostrate gland, and in the context of pregnancy sonographies
  • Ultrasound of surface structures: chest, bones, lymph nodes or thyroid gland are examined with highly-resolving sound heads
  • Doppler and colour doppler sonographies: to identify vascular diseases

Computer tomography

A CT can display several organs in the form of cross-sectional images. Each examination produces several pictures and is performed with the patient lying down. A contrast medium is administered for nearly all CT examinations, in order to ensure a good demarcation of the intestines from the surrounding organs.

NOTE: A CT examination may not be advisable in case of allergies, pregnancy and previous allergic reactions to contrast media.

CT measurements of bone density

CT measurements of bone density are carried out to eliminate the possibility of osteoporosis.

X-ray examinations for which you need an empty stomach:

  • Computer tomography (except for bone CT)
  • Ultrasound of the upper abdomen
  • IVP (contrast examination of the kidneys and the urinary bladder)
  • intravenous cholangiography (contrast examination of the bile ducts)
  • upper gastrointestinal x-ray series
  • phlebography

Examinations taking place in the morning usually require an empty stomach, so do not eat or drink anything before the examination!

Important information on iodine allergy

For some x-ray examinations the patients are injected an iodine costrast medium. If you suffer from an iodine allergy, please inform the ward sister or the x-ray assistant!

Special preparations for examinations

  • Irrigoscopy (x-ray of the large intestine)
On the evening prior to the examination only eat liquid or paste-like food (soup, puree, etc.)!
Around 10 p.m., take an X-Prep (= laxative) and drink 1l of liquid.
On the day of the examination normal food is allowed after 1 p.m.

  • Double contrast radiography of the small intestine:
    Preparation as agreed.

  • Ultrasound of the hypogastrium or the urinary bladder:
Drink 1l of liquid (tea, juice, tap water – no mineral water!) and come  to the examination with a full bladder.

What happens with your x-rays?

The x-rays are your property and will be brought to your room after they have been analysed.

Keep your x-rays in a safe place!

For your treatment it is often important to compare new x-rays with your old ones (also if they were made by other institutions). Always bring your old x-rays to an x-ray examination!
