The history of Wiener Privatklinik

1871: Löw Sanatorium Women’s Hospital

Inseparably linked with the history of Wiener Privatklinik is the name of Dr. Anton Löw. He was born in the city of Bratislava in 1847 and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine in Vienna in 1871. Dr. Anton Löw was an extremely successful physician and also assumed the directorship of several other sanatoriums, such as the sanatorium of Purkersdorf near Vienna or the sanatorium at Mariannengasse in Vienna.

1929: S.-Canning Childs Foundation

On 19 September 1929, the renowned American S.-Canning Childs Foundation purchased the Löw Sanatorium Women’s Hospital. The sanatorium was known for its modern maternity hospital all over the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

The first director of the hospital was Dr. Alfred Edelmann. The founder of the foundation was Mr. Childs, a Polish jew by the name of Kindermann, who renamed himself Childs, when he emigrated to the United States of America. The story goes that Mr. Childs met Dr. Edelmann on a health cure in the then fashionable Czech spa of Karlovy Vary and was so impressed by the latter’s skills that he offered the physician the position of hospital director. The “young” hospital focused its activities mainly on the fields of surgery, internal medicine and urology.

1987: First kidney transplant in a Viennese private hospital

A milestone in the hospital’s surgical history was a kidney transplant in 1987, which was the first kidney transplant ever performed in a Viennese private hospital.

1987: Renovation

In 1987, the hospital building was completely renovated and since then has counted among the most exclusive private hospitals in Europe.

Since 1995: Operated by Wiener Privatklinik Betriebs-Ges.m.b.H. & Co.KG

Since 1995, the hospital has been operated by Wiener Privatklinik Betriebs-Ges.m.b.H. & Co.KG under management director Prim. Dr. Walter Ebm and administrative director Dipl.KH-Bw. Robert Nikolaus Winkler.

2005: New extension of Wiener Privatklinik

With the extension of its hospital building, which now consists of two wings, Wiener Privatklinik further consolidates its position as one of the leading private hospitals in Vienna. The new southern wing of the hospital offers state-of-the-art equipment, new possibilities in diagnostics and excellent medical and nursing care for its patients in an elegant atmosphere.

The southern wing of Wiener Privatklinik, a six-storey building which is linked to the original part of the hospital by means of several connecting bridges has already been in operation since March 2005.

With two additional bed wards, Wiener Privatklinik was able to increase its capacity to a total of 130 beds, whereby 55 two-bed rooms and 20 single-bed rooms are available for its exacting patients. If required, some of the two-bed rooms can be rearranged to function as spacious single-bed rooms.

Particular importance was attached to creating a pleasant atmosphere, which is not only characterised by elegant furnishings, but also by providing every modern comfort. Thus each bed is equipped with a flat TV screen, IT connection point and Internet access.

In addition to the wards, the southern wing of Wiener Privatklinik accommodates a large physiotherapy area, a practice centre for a variety of different specialists and consulting rooms for our accredited physicians.

The eye-catcher of the new building is the reception area with a modern, open-plan reception and comfortable lounges. The first floor accommodates an attractive cafeteria with access to the terrace and the park.

With regard to diagnostics, the southern wing of Wiener Privatklinik offers numerous new features. To further improve diagnosis and therapy for its patients, the hospital received a heart catheter laboratory with state-of-the-art angiography equipment which can be used to visualise coronary arteries and all other blood vessels. The device is one of the most modern in Vienna and allows the treating physician to diagnose and eliminate angiostenoses in a single intervention.

Our x-ray practice was also generously extended and its technology was updated and enhanced. With the help of new computer tomography equipment, the range of diagnostic services offered by the practice was increased for all patients of our hospital. As an alternative to classic colonoscopy, it is now possible to perform a CT scan of the whole intestinal tract.
